M.E / M. Tech Entrance and it's scope

M. Tech/ME - The Course
In India, a Master of Engineering (ME) or Master of Technology (M. Tech) degree is a postgraduate program in engineering or technology. This is a 2-years program in a specific branch of engineering or a technical field. Generally a student enters the ME/MTech programs after the completion of the 4-year undergraduate program in engineering after being certified a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Technology degree, or a 5-year program in Science or Applied Sciences resulting in the award of a Master of Science degree. This is a course of 2 years span, having 4 semesters.
Minimum Requirements for M.Tech.
Candidates having valid GATE score and
Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Technology / Architecture, or
Master's degree in Mathematics / Physics / Life Science / related subjects, or
Candidates yet to appear in the final examination for the above qualifying degree [(i) or (ii)] and whose results are likely to be declared by July, 2010,or
Associate Membership holders of the professional bodies for admission into their parent disciplines from the following:
The Institution of Engineers (India) (AMIE)
The Aeronautical Society of India (AESI) (eligible only for aerodynamics, structures and propulsions streams)
The Indian Institute of Metals (AMIIM)

Scope after M. Tech or ME
As the sum of human knowledge increases and business gets more sophisticated across the world. It is not merely technology literacy that would serve the industry. Student has to through for a complete range of experience. Most of the government sectors and big entrepreneurs ask for M. A master student in engineering can always get placed in a better position in industry, than that of a graduate. Keeping in mind the current need of industry and competitive edge most of the BE or BTech graduates prefer to do MTech after qualifying GATE. Thus it is highly important for a Graduate to pursue his/her MTech degree from a prestigious institute. Doing MTech from a normal engineering college and doing the same from IITs, IIS or NITs is a different thing altogether. All you need is a good GATE Score.  The advantage of doing MTech from these institutions is that when you are in your final semester you are likely to get placements through campus recruitments.

Do's and Don'ts for GATE Entrance

Do's
Try to clear your concepts by solving questions.
Refer the GATE syllabus and study topic by topic and then solve objective questions.
Develop the art of adopting tricks for solving objective questions.
Solve previous years GATE questions. Analyze and solve questions from different concept, which would enable you to learn new concepts.
Solve questions from related topics form other subject of GATE papers and IES questions.
Cover every topic so that at least you can attempt easy questions.
Keep your formula list ready so that you can go for quick revision before the actual exam. 
Don’ts
Don’t read too many books only refer reference books.
Don’t believe in Indian publisher's books, as there are very few good books in market.
Don’t spend much time in reading theories, try to build concept only, as concept is the king in GATE.
Don’t leave any topic; try to cover every topic as it would help to solve at least easy questions.
Don’t refer too many book for solving objective question, rather you solve questions from GATE and IES.
Don’t solve many questions, solve only quality questions.
Don’t ignore Mathematics as one can score high marks in it.

GATE study tips and tricks

Deep understanding of fundamentals: .
  Right understanding of fundamentals is the key to GATE success, as we know GATE entrance is all about testing the fundamentals and questions are based on origin of the fundamentals. Involve yourself in this ongoing process of GATE preparation and the first stage should be placing yourself at the peak by getting your fundamentals right and then testing yourself.
  Needless to mention as you might have heard it many times before. But it is true - hard work pays off. If you want to succeed in GATE you have to practice, practice and practice. You have to love the efforts by self motivating which are the only lasting factors besides fear and reward. Just ignore the mistakes and errors as rightly said - If you're not making mistakes, then you're not doing anything. If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the competitive drive could be achieved.

Selecting the right coach
  Coaching could provide mutual model of communication, inspire the student and develop the highest potential in him/her. It is important to be coached by professionals for GATE preparation. Selecting the right coach and right study material is a difficult deal altogether. Seek for the advice of your seniors and faculties whom you trust. Standard of material, Testing scheme, Reporting, Faculty deliverance in classroom, student strength, past track record are few parameters you must consider before enrolling. The coaching model and mechanism should be flexible enough to let you know where you went wrong and smooth the friction of your efforts in cracking GATE.
  As we know GATE is a multiple choice examination throw yourself into the habit of solving relevant objective questions rapidly, right after you finish studying a particular subject. Solving previous year GATE question papers would let you know where you stand. Group discussions are another way of promoting your self esteem.
  What is unique about the study materials that are offered by the coaching institute? The study material hardly could assist you if it has been directly extracted from textbooks. The coaching material should be short, to the point, summarized and well researched to inculcate interest in you. The tests should cover every area of testing and the test report should highlight your mistakes and your rank. You should enjoy reading textbooks available in the book store published by good authors.
  Do they have enough books in library? You need good books that would instigate your brain to function during the process of theory conceptualizing and application building tricks.
  Classroom rehearsal: Who are the faculties and their teaching experience would matter a lot for you in classroom. It is only selected conceptual questions on each topic could develop application capability contrary non-conceptual questions will waste your precious time.
  Testing and reporting: The testing and evaluation model offered by the coach is equally important. Your progress chart, errors reporting, comparative rank of the feedback system would guide you correctly.
Add more fuel:
  Solving GATE papers: Read and solve the previous years' GATE question papers and get inspired to solve more and more of similar papers in future. Solving the papers gives you idea of the standard of questions that are being raised.
  Monitoring your performance: Analyze your test performance to determine how things could be improved, how could you score more? Scrutinize your performance of each topic and plan your strategy accordingly. Monitor your rank.
  An actual testing environment: Classroom is the place where the actual test happens. While appearing the test take it seriously, avoid disruption, and set your clock rightly. However if you have enrolled for a correspondence coaching you can set a similar environment at you home.
Summary:
  Strong Knowledge of Fundamentals and Concepts + Accuracy + Speed is the key to your GATE success.
Select the right coach. Don't forget today it is not the classroom that is the repository of publicity, but the advertising agencies.
Always focus on the concepts.
Don't walk into volumes of theory without understanding the root of what's essential for you.
Follow good text books available in market.
Dedicate for a study of 8 to10 hrs everyday to cover the syllabus.
After reaching the comfort zone of preparation, appear for some mock exams. Appearing a mock test would let you know where you stand in this race amongst other aspirants.
Practice previous year GATE papers continuously.
Monitor your performance.

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) techniques

Cautious vs. Bold Approach

Candidates appearing for multiple choice questions (MCQ) papers in which the general trend is to deduct marks for each wrong answer that they attempt. Evidently students omit many questions for fear of losing marks where there is negative marking. It has been noted that those who omit more questions out of fear are not necessarily much less competent than those who omit few questions. It is certainly a burning issue whether it is right to answer those "uncertainly and not ignorant" types of questions.
Candidates attempting MCQ pattern question papers are habitually unsure about how many questions they should appear in order to do justice to their knowledge and preparation. In this context a relatively bolder approach where students are reasonably sure of the correct answer is recommended. Attempting all questions with a random guess of 50% chance of being correct, and attempt based on some knowledge should increase the probability and so improve the score.

Student should collect previous question papers for this self assessment with different techniques (i.e., cautious vs. bold) and compare the marks to know which technique is effective for them. Students consistently obtaining high score out of their factual guessing are recommended to adopt a bolder strategy in MCQ examination. Guesses based on some knowledge of the subject are more likely to be right than wrong, contrary wild guessing on the basis of total ignorance is likely to lose marks.
However factors like (How genuine and important is the paper, examination condition, consequence of attempting test) may limit our self evaluation. The real heat could be only felt in examination hall.

How to prepare for GATE Entrance

Introspection and self analysis is the best key .

Follow standard textbooks referred by your faculties.
Read the concepts to the depth, visualize and then understand.
Imagine how and where they could be helpful and could be applied practically.
Exercise problems which are given at the end of each chapter of your textbook should be solved analytically.  Don't spend your precious time solving too many questions. Contrary you should target questions that could be helpful only for your GATE preparation.
Reading two different subjects simultaneously is recommended as it would boost a sense of closeness towards your target and you won't feel bored too.

9) Keep yourself updated about the recent developments in GATE by either logging on to their official site or some helpline or helpful blogs. Check the latest syllabus and paper pattern before you start preparing.
10) Revise ( Very Important , as when u see the paper in examination hall , your answering will totally depend how good you revised you topics).

GATE Tips N Tricks


1. Material Collection
    • Syllabus
    • All the relevant books based on the subject(Divide the books in two groups -
    (1) Fundamental and basic concepts (2) Problem oriented
    • Some books helpful for pre-requisite knowledge on the subject
    • Some good guide books for GATE
    • Previous questions papers
2. Keep contact with some expert and GATE experienced persons
3. Study - Syllabus and Previous questions papers
4. Start from the first chapter
    • read at least 5 books, it will widen your knowledge(if necessary consult with the books for      pre-requisite knowledge or with some expert)
    • Note down the probable concepts (definitions, unit, dimension etc.)
    • Note down necessary theories, formulae etc
    • Solve problems as maximum as possible(from text books, Guide books etc)
    • Think about various tricks in solving problems(if necessary, note it)
    • Go for series of self tests based on this chapter(take other's help to conduct tests)
    • Continue the self tests until getting a very good score
5. Solve more and more problems, discover more and more new tricks…
6. Follow the same procedure for the rest chapters
7. Finally, go for self tests based on whole syllabus (take other's help to conduct these tests)
8. On the exam day…you will be at the Pick, who can stop you?

GATE FAQ ‘s All you need to know about GATE


GATE is the most coveted entrance exam acting as a pathway to higher education , for the technical graduates. The demography of the examinees writing GATE largely comprises of the students from private engineering colleges who due to some reason or the other haven’t been able to crack AIEEE or JEE belying their talent after +2. For them, it is the best chance to prove that they too deserve a place in India’s premier T-Schools.

As a GATE-2010(CS) qualified student, I would like to address some of the issues and confusions that the aspirants face during the period of GATE preparation. I will present the answer to some FAQs(frequently asked questions ) here that most students ask, same was my case when I was preparing for GATE. I will be oriented towards CS&IT because I was a CS student and I don’t have ideas about other branches. But most parts of the article should be useful for every branch. If you are a non-CS student you can skip the parts where I’ve delved into CS specifics.
Please note that everything in this article reflects my view and may not comply to everyone else’s view.
Q-1. Is coaching necessary for success in GATE?
Ans. No it is not. But joining a test series from any good coaching institute is what I recommend. Every test exposes some part of the syllabus you aren’t proficient with. So you can work and repair yourself with that part.
Q-2. I don’t have GATEForum or Brilliant study material. How should I study?
Ans. You don’t need any third party study material if you seriously want to crack GATE. You just need the standard course books and previous year GATE papers. I’ll suggest the best course books for the subjects later in the article, but only for CS&IT because I’m a CS student.
Q-3. How should I prepare?
Ans. Well, if you have studied properly during your B.Tech/B.E. then you don’t need to prepare!!! Hehehe! But noone actually studies seriously during B.Tech/B.E.! Engineering is fun time! Passing exams during B.Tech/B.E involves mugging up the important stuff the night before paper and vomiting everything in the answer book! Back to our topic now, well if you have slight ideas of every subject, at least the overview i.e. what the subject is all about and some other basic fundas then you can prepare easily. Just collect all the standard books and previous year papers. Identify the topics which are source to questions in the previous papers and study the topics seriously and thoroughly, followed by practicing questions asked in papers from  previous years. That was the way I prepared. As an added advantage, join a test series. To further add up, try to collect test series papers from other institutes from your friends if you can. The crux is that, study the topics and practice more and more and more ….. and more and even more and yet even more questions.
Q-4. How to perform self study?
Ans. Answered in Q-3. I’m emphasizing self-study only.
Q-5. How to start GATE  preparations? 
Ans. Collect standard books. If you have sold them then collect anyhow, from your friends or from the seconds sale books market or anywhere you can. Then identify the topics from previous year papers and make a list for each subject. The list should be sorted in descending order of the frequency of topic in GATE papers. For example: for TOC I had identified the most frequent topic as “Identifying the grammar or language”. For Computer Architecture, “Pipelining” and “Cache memory” were hot topics. in Data Structures and Algorithms “Trees” were hot.  I’ve misplaced my list, otherwise I would have posted it for the students.
Q-6. I’m a working professional, I don’t have time. Can I even dream of GATE?
Ans. If your CS concepts are clear, you don’t need to dream, because you can do it! You just need 2 hours every day for 3 months. Thats enough to crack GATE.
Q-7. Which books should I study for CS&IT?
Ans.

Ans. You can drop a subject if you hate it. Concentrate and focus more on subjects that you are interested with.
